Izakaya Lanterns

Since being resident in Tokyo I’ve been endeavouring to release my inner photographer. I’m sure everyone who visits this city armed with a camera must have a similar love affair with the lanterns which line narrow alleyways at night.

Shot on Pentax ME Super ISO 1600.

Jamie Woon Night Air

Congrats to East London brethren Mr Jamie Woon on a sick tune with a sick video, which looks only moments away from smashing it up in the UK. You folks in Japan will see this man soon I am certain.

Japanese Bank Account

Japanese Bank Cards in Pantone!

Japanese Bank Cards in Pantone!

I opened an account today and although I am not here to write ex-pat Japan guides (plenty of good conversations online already) I was taken with the bank cards…upon opening an account at this particular bank you are presented with a book that resembles a Pantone swatch (!) to pick your favourite colour, with names like ‘Tomato Kiss’ and ‘First Rouge’.

Japanese Bank Reading Glasses

Japanese Bank Reading Glasses

The bank also has these special colour-coded reading glasses for age ranges 40, 50 and 60. Presumably the older you get the worse your eyes become.

Happy Friday

Nama biiru!

Japanese billboard ads aren’t always my favourite items of Japanese design, but you can’t mess with the art direction of this one, which currently adorns the platform at Koenji JR station. The message is clear and I concur. Time for a biiru.

Musashino Art University Festival 2010

An Exhibit from Musashino Art University Festival 2010

Beautiful, minimal use of space and colour. This piece was fun and playful.

Write your worries on the mystery package and smash it. I wrote わかりません。

Monimals. I’m sure these guys are going to be a smash. They have a cute texture not quite like anything you’ve felt before.

These crisp typographic pieces are witty wordplays, whose meaning was lost on me.

Rabbits ですよ!

Musashino Art University Festival 2010

There was a big display of these puppets which I documented extensively with my Pentax using film. If the shots come out well they will appear online.

Youth energy from performing artists. You can hear some guys in the audience going nuts. Filmed by ever faithful camerawoman Aya from my shoulders.

Nice invention for the mother with her hands full, just bounce that baby across the Suica/Pasmo reader and stroll through.

Manga by Natsuko. Her stand was full of fans… a star in the making perhaps.

Last but not least, the giant penis parade.

Pecha Kucha Tokyo Vol.77

Broke my Pecha-Kucha cherry last night. Each speaker was varied and captivating. A lot to take in but here are the first two that came to mind when I woke up this morning.

D&AD 2010 @ ADMT Tokyo

There was a strict no-photography rule in place at ADMT so I didn’t get too far with my camera before getting busted. These are my only shots.

Registering a Bicycle in Tokyo

Registering a Bike in Japan

Gone done registered. Tokyo is a dream to ride with perfectly maintained roads. The only major peculiarity I’ve come up against is that cyclists here don’t indicate their moves and if you do indicate, motorists freak out thinking you’re trying to communicate something more urgent and complex than “turning right”.
